After the Curfew (Usmar Ismail, 1954)
Your liberated country wants to be in a musical. You who liberated it are stuck tormented in a noir. This does rise above being a rare and curious movie from an interesting point in history, however slightly. It's strength lies in depicting that separation between those irretrievably affected and those not, hidden pasts behind public faces, lines and networks of emotion and desperation charted underneath. It's a movie potentially aware and cynical, and one would hope that would carry through the rollout of Indonesian history with its new orders, purges, foreign interventions, East Timors, etc. I'm not sure that those movies would be funded, though.

one of the things about having an unstable parent is that it can so easily ruin your future. you want to get out, but getting out takes having agency. it takes the resume and the grades and the stellar community service history.
but you have to choose your battles. you know if you sign up for an after-school activity, it'll be okay for a while, so long as the activity is parent-approved and god-fearing. over time, like all things, it will become an argument (i can't keep carting your ass to these things) or a weapon (talk to me like that again, see if you get to go to practice). sometimes, if you love the thing, it's worth it. but you also know better than to love something: that's how they get you. if you ever actually want something, it will always be the center of their attention. they will never stop threatening you with it. telling you of course i'm a good parent, i came to all of those stupid events.
you learn to balance yourself perfectly. you can either have a social life or you can have hobbies. both of these things will be under constant scrutiny. you spend too much time with her, you should be at home with family is equally paired with you're acting like this because you're addicted to what's on that goddamn screen. you cannot ever actually win, so everything falls within a barter system that you calculate before entering: do you want to learn how to drive? if so, you'll need to give up asking for a new laptop, even though yours died. maybe you can work on a computer at the library. of course, that would mean you'd be allowed to go to the library, which would mean something else has to bleed. nothing ever actually comes free.
and that bitter, horrible irony: you could be literally following their orders and it still isn't pretty. they tell you to get a job; they hate that your job keeps you late and gives you access to actual money. they tell you to do better in school; they say no child of mine needs a tutor. they want you to stop being so morose, don't you know there are people who are really suffering - but they revile the idea you might actually need therapy.
you didn't survive that fall the way other people would. you've seen other people scramble and get their way out, however they could. maybe you were made too-soft: the answer didn't come to you easily. it wasn't quick. it was brutal and nasty. some people even asked you why didn't you just work hard and escape during school? and you felt your head spinning. why didn't you? (they control your financial aid. they control your loan status. they love having that kind of thing). maybe in another life you got diagnosed sooner and got the meds you needed to actually focus and got attention from the right teachers who helped you clear hurdles to get up out of here - but for now? here?
the effort of trying. the effort of not-dying. that kind of effort was absolutely agonizing.
#writeblr#btw i got out#even though i felt this way#i was undiagnosed and was in a particularly fucked up situation#(it's complicated lol)#i had no money and no way out#no car no license . i still had a curfew at 22 years old#and still. i got out.#you can get out too.#i wasn't allowed to literally do anything after school we were pretty much only allowed 1 hobby#and STILL i got out.#it wasn't bc i was particularly smart or capable or clever. it's that 1. i got lucky & 2.#i knew there had to be The Rest of The World#and I wanted to at least VAGUELY get to the Rest of the World before i gave up trying#sometimes it's the spite that gets u thru it. that sense - fuck u#FUCK YOU ACTUALLY.#im gonna make my own life u stupid bitch. since u seem so convinced i could never REALLY do it.#whenever ppl are like <3 just cut out ur parents <3 im like <3 have u never been poor lol <3#<3 i needed them to sign my loans <3#<3 bestie not every person who is struggling is going to be able to make the grades and hero status to get a free ride.#and guess what baby!! we still deserve to get out and have a good life.

JeanMarco in which Jean slowly falls for Marco while Marco always thought they were a couple is so funny to me guys like you don't understand how much I love this concept of, you know,,, Jean having this realization that he's in love with his best friend and getting so anxious about it because what if Marco doesn't feel the same??? Mikasa was proof enough that confessing wasn't an option, he didn't want to ruin their friendship. But man doesn't he love Marco so much.
Meanwhile Marco is like 'Man I wonder what my boyfriend is doing right now' while working on his ODM with Armin. 'I can't wait to spend some time with Jean, maybe we will go star watching tonight'. To Marco they're already married with two kids coming soon. Don't ask him how he gets hold of two kids, he's working on it. The idea is that they are together your honor
#Jean finally confesses and Marco's reaction is 'What..? I thought we were dating already?'#Jean is loosing his shit because what??? No way. He would know if he was dating someone right? Is obvious!#'Jean. We cuddle every night. We hold hands on our way to the cafeteria. We GO ON DATES during curfew. You think I let all my friends count#ALL my freckles at night??? We promised each other to live together inside the walls. I already talked with Mina to help me kidnap#some kids-' 'You did what'#Anyway they kiss after that#Mina is a true homie for helping Marco have kids. She somehow convinced Annie to help too#Annie saw some orphan kids laying around while being a sneaky spy. She knows all the good spots#anyway#aot#jean kirstein#jeanmarco#aot jean#marco bodt#marco bott#snk#aot marco#jean kirschstein#aot jeanmarco

Keith walking into the holding cell greeting all the regulars by name while Lance is sobbing lamenting that his life is over and his future is ruined (they were like. Trespassing or some shit he’s going to be fine)
lance: (actively dry heaving in the corner, on the verge of a panic attack as he imagines having a permanent record)(actually what does a permanent record even look like?)(omg is he going to have to go to COURT? like in JUDGE JUDY?)
keith: remy, this is lance. lance, this is remy, she’s my favorite alcoholic :)
#voltron#klance#honestly I imagine they got caught trespassing while ghost hunting#if they’re in Texas then they will most likely get a full on misdemeanor on their record. Texas is very big on property rights.#trespassing can quickly elevate to criminal charges in texas it is actually very serious. do not trespass in texas.#meanwhile in Maine trespassing can be just an infraction & not added to your record#like sure they're teenagers so they could get their records sealed or expunged when they're 18. but like. the garrison would know. not good#sorry i just like talking about the law#speaking of which let me go on a tangent#i do think keith frequently gets charged with trespassing. at his own shack in the desert.#and so now he is Really good at juvenile law specifically because he is constantly arguing with cops#keith: this is not trespassing. my dad owned this property & he died unmarried without a will.#keith: i am literally his child and i inherited this land after his death YOU CAN'T ARREST ME FOR TRESPASSING ON MY OWN PROPERTY.#cop: okay well the house is all burned down it's a safety hazard#keith: I AM NOT IN THE HOUSE I AM IN THE SHACK WHICH MEETS MINIMUM SAFETY REQUIREMENTS. GET FUCKED.#cop: okay but you're out after curfew--#keith: is this a game to you? drag me in front of that judge i DARE you. you want to take the ORPHAN to court over CURFEW?#keith: you want to arrest my parents? WHAT PARENTS? everyone in this county knows me as the son of a hero firefighter.#keith: a hero firefighter who died in the line of duty btw. in case you forgot. since i'm an ORPHAN who has no one who CARES about CURFEW.#keith: my dad is dead my mom is gone my brother disappeared in space im 0 for 3 parents-wise. drag me before a judge. make my fucking night#sometimes i answer an ask or make a post specifically so i can do my own separate thing in the tags#i just like talking about law. i'm so excited for law school u guys#keith#lance#lance: (freaking out)#keith: (relaxed because he knows a really good lawyer who specializes in juvenile law)#shitpost#ask#anonymous#otp: we are a good team

October 17 20XX, one year after moving to Vaviel
Following the rumors and strange happenings in town, Resident Services decided to enact a curfew. When the sun sets and the lights turn on, all residents must find their ways back home. Nobody is allowed out after nightfall. This curfew was put in place for our safety, and many of the residents feel that it will help. I can only hope that they are right. I am tired of losing friends..
Signed XXXX
#this log isnt in order with the others btw#most of the other resident logs take place after the curfew was put in place#i should really make a timeline to keep track of things but im lazy so maybe later#also this log will eventually make its way onto the board in game#animal crossing#acnh#animal crossing new horizons#new horizons#acnh exterior#just some island lore#forestcore#naturecore#acnh forestcore#acnh naturecore#cluttercore#acnh cluttercore#acnh aesthetic#animal crossing aesthetic

I mean this in the best way, but I cannot wait until I start seeing more comics from you about the pains/oddities of spending every moment with another human being
Cheers!
...Oh trust me, I have no idea what to expect from that situation or from my own feelings in it tbh
It typically goes great when we visit each other and I'm very much on board, and I trust us being with each other will be less intense once we can be physically together in a more permanent manner because there won't be fear of missing out on time together or anything, but yeah, I'll admit a tiny part of me is terrified it'll ruin everything because I've been used to living on my own and vibing that way for so long
...That said, I'm the one who thought of marriage in the first place, my gut says to try it anyway despite all those fears, and my partner values my privacy and individuality as well as their own, so... Fingers crossed y'know
#anon#that was felt tho#but ye my gut tells me i'll feel worse if i don't go through with it#and after the lockdowns and curfews and not being able to do what i want in the past years#following my gut feels like an increasingly good idea#hasn't disappointed me often
